I have been working at GateHouse Media

Pros

Great people to work with. Offers an opportunity to gain some good experience in the selling of digital products.

Cons

Fiscally unstable. Seems we are always selling to the needs of the paper and not the client...way too many special sales drives.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont shackle your sales team with endless reports. Allowing us the time needed to get out in the field and sell will increase revenue.

    Pros

A good starting point for journalism and entry into the business
    Knowledgeable editors
    Decent work-life balance
Variety of different stories to work on

    Cons

    Low pay
    No raises
Even on weeks of loaded coverage, approved overtime requires moving of Heaven and Earth
The company is $1.2 billion in debt (which accounts for those first three cons)
Way behind the 21st-century technology curve in news reporting

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Approve raises for the lifeblood of your company, the hard-working reporters, photographers and editors who bust their asses every day and week to put out the publications that keep the business going. Instead of for the exalted senior management getting bonuses in the six figures on the backs of the little people's efforts.

I worked at GateHouse Media full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good place for some hard news experience.

    Cons

Poor pay and hard workload. Reporters write 4-8 stories weekly at a rate of $12.5/hour or $26k, about 2 nights each week covering town meetings until 10 p.m. Disillusioned editors who don't care about mentoring or improving your writing, but rather just putting out a paper and getting another day done with. No raises. If you're a college graduate interested in journalism, this company just might make you rethink your passions. Get some experience and get out before you're dragged too far down into the mud.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

INVEST in creating a better environment for employees. Let them feel they belong here, have a future at this company and that the company cares about them. None of this is being done right now.
