I worked at Gawker Media

Pros

All Gawker's sites have notoriety and huge reader base. It's a great place for an aspiring writer to make a name for themselves, but don't expect a huge salary or great benefits -- or good hours. However, you can easily make the jump from Gawker to another, more employee friendly company, plus some people thrive on the huge workload.

Cons

LONG hours, huge expectations, very sink or swim attitude. Either you can hack it or you can't, there is no middle ground. Benefits suck.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your people and listen to them when they're unhappy! Also, large changes at the company can be quite sudden and unpredictable.

I have been working at Gawker Media

    Pros

If you want to write and you want to be read, go to Gawker. There's also a bowling team.

    Cons

No health insurance and the uncertainty of contract work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nick Denton doesn't need my advice.

Fun place to be but not for a career

I worked at Gawker Media full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Roof deck, free parties, decent perks i.e. catered food, matching 401, free gym membership. People are pretty cool if you need to interact with them but there isn't a real culture of camaraderie .

    Cons

It might be a departmental issue but management really drops the ball on managing their people. There is no follow up or direction on their part. They seem to be busy building the business externally rather than internally. You are basically on your own to push your career forward there. Fun stuff to do but not very rewarding. Like a previous reviewer stated it seems more like a stop gap company where you stay for a bit, eat some hors d'oeuvres and go on your next thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try to have more of a 360 review process, perhaps more frequently. Engage your team more often and see what they are up to and what their goals are and how you can help them get there.
