I have been working at Gem City Home Care full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Autonomy is great as well as independent, no micromanagement. Work at your own pace. Gas card allownec per month is generous and able to talk mileage for own reimbursement. Furnished phone, tablet for charting with easy to use software programs.

Cons

Pay per visit and difficulty at times to maintain client visit for profitable salary. Significant miles on vehicle. On call and administion increasing time for availability for phone hours with no additional pay/reimburment. Poor communication between management to field staff and lack of cohesive relationships between office and field staff. Crisis management at times. Poor PTO, only 5 days after 1st year and have to find own coverage for client when you do schedule time off.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communication, stop sending emails and communcations in CAPS! Orginaze senior managment and improve initial training and continued training/updates.

Not the worst place to work but far from the best.

I have been working at Gem City Home Care full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The actual job is pretty fantastic. You mostly have a good bit of freedom and flexibility. Minimal micromanagement. Patients are overall great to work with. Educating them is fun and rarely a chore. Most of the office staff that you will deal with on a day to day basis are helpful and sweet.

    Cons

Bending over backwards will get you nowhere except burnt out. Virtually impossible to maintain a work/life balance. The benefits are by and large absolute junk. PTO is 1 week paid and 1 week unpaid for the first five years and even the PTO is only 25 visits. Most employees can't make a living on 25 visits per week at 35 dollars a visit. If you're looking for a place that increases pay over time look elsewhere. On call is abysmal. You must be on call 5-6 weeks per year as a nurse and it completely wipes you out on busy weeks as you're on call for 1 week straight with no break in your normal case load. You can almost always count on doing at least 10 extra visits in addition to your 25+ weekly. There is really no way to eliminate that. Overall, you'll be overworked and underpaid at this job whether you work in the office or out in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop sending e-mails written in caps lock or all bold red letters and learn some internet etiquette. Caps lock means you're yelling at your employees. In fact, stop treating people like children in general. Don't be condescending if you want "your employees" to respect you as a clinical manager. Actually, stop thinking that field staff sits around a computer all day waiting for important e-mails. Remember what it is like to be in the field? We're busy. If you have something important to say call meetings or just call us period. At least pretend to care about the well being of your employees. At this point many of us feel like we're just raking in the money for the corporation that now owns Gem City and it's sad. Gem City has changed.
