Pros

Smart people, work hard, rewarding place to work. The goals of the company make it a rewarding place to work.

Cons

With the merger with Roche, Genentech is now part of a very large international organization. This creates challenges of working for an international organization.

Advice to Management

Genentech has a wonderful cultural and I hope that continues as the company moves into the future as a global leader.

    Pros

The people I think are the number one reason its a great place to work. They've got great benefits compared toother companies. And the pay is pretty good too. And you are working for a company with a purpose.

    Cons

Its extremely fast paced and the line between work and home get very blurred. There is no possible way to complete your normal job in a 40 hour week. This is pretty normal and known through out the organization. It can get to be too much at times and a lot of people burn out.

Not the darling child it once was...very difficult place to be and work.

    Pros

Beautiful campus in San Francisco with excellent amenities such as multiple cafeterias, gym, lounge, campus bus, great views, and decent parking. Standard benefits are very competitive.

    Cons

Standard benefits are not necessarily much better then competitors. The soft benefits like employee discounts and concierge are shiny add-ons, they don't really add to "great". Management is self involved and not in touch with the front line staff. Promotions are not given where warranted by performance and contribution. Raises are poor in relation to workload and objectives expectations. Communication is poor and untimely, and facts are heavily watered down. There's a general sense of distrust and foreboding. Key information to doing one's job is compartmentalized and siloed so one works is in a vacuum. Compensation is out of line with hours of wirk and amount of work expected -- no work-life balance.

    Advice to Management

Throw out the "360 degree" review process so people stop trying to make their buddies and themselves look good to keep jobs and get raises. Actually listen to the people under you, especially the front line staff, and help them. Pay front line staff commensurate with their experience and work load. Hire more people instead of burning out the ones you have. Stop giving lip service to work-life balance and avoiding burnout...it's too late.
