Management has head in the clouds. They think that nothing can touch Genentech and this sometimes leaves them oblivious to their current surroundings. Kinda like my crap doesn't stink....

Once a small and agile company, has now become big pharma

    Pros

Good science leads to a satisfying work experience. Excellent colleagues and department-level leadership. Benefits quite good, salary about average, bonuses reasonable (though falling)

    Cons

Big pharma management style now results in sudden largescale shifts in emphasis, dropping or indefinite parking of research programs and arbitrary-seeming layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Better face-to-face communication. Should replace or supplement email announcements of major changes with VP presentations to departments. Further erosion of bonuses, if not made up at least in part by salary increases will lead to dissatisfaction. Sadly, Genentech has probably seen it's last year being on the list of '100 best places to work'.
