    A "casually intense" workplace

Current Employee - Summer Intern in South San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Genentech as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Brilliantly educated minds in business, finance and science
Casual attire with an intense passion for the patients
    Great perks for all levels
Rotational programs, tuition reimbursements, they really want to develop strong employees
Great pay (at least for an intern)

    Cons

Some departments (finance) can be a bit up-tight about things like dress and behavior
A fair amount of politicking, especially among managers.
Frivolously spend money on perks which are designed to "boost morale"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your interns with substantial projects - compiling spreadsheets is fine, but don't micromanage us the whole time.

Research career at Genentech is hierarchical, unappreciated, underpaid and a dead-end career

Former Employee - Research Associate in South San Francisco, CA
Former Employee - Research Associate in South San Francisco, CA

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Best in class for biotech research, top-scientist, ample resources available for research and very thorough evaluation of every project. Very data-oriented.

    Cons

Career advancement opportunities are extremely limited (almost non-existent) in research at Genentech. A research associate with a master's degree has never made to the "scientist" level. This kind of hierarchical structure and neglect for one's career outside of lab is hindering the talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Researchers are not your slaves. Respect them, offer other career alternatives, promote from within and you will see the organization succeed. Genentech has dropped off the cliff in the "best companies in the US to work for" ranking. Roche influence is very obvious. Protect your original culture.
