Summer Intern

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
South San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Genentech as an intern for less than a year

Pros-phenomenal industry reputation/respect/recognition
-as an intern, super helpful in opening doors at companies/firms for interviews
-unbelievable networking opportunities...if you work hard and link up with the right people, great chance that you could land an interview for a Genentech job
-very smart, very hardworking people
-great mentoring for young professionals
-gym is great
-salary for full time positions is very hard to beat
-cafeterias have excellent dining options (decent coffee)

Cons-not in a vibrant area...you're essentially locked inside campus during the workday, which is mildly boring for the younger crowd
-in my opinion, way too big. You'll run across several people a day that you may never again see again
-not the best place for a young, new professional to work simply because it is challenging to meet people, internally, that are close to your age (under 30-40), have similar interests, etc. because it is such a competitive company, most people are highly accomplished and there are few, if any, recent college grads.
-somewhat slow pace, with regard to how long it takes to get things done (probably because of the size of the company)

Advice to Senior ManagementWell, I would say foster incentives that encourage younger employees to join the company and network with other young, just-begun professionals. Tough to stick around if you can't create a vibrant social, non-work life.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
