I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

There are some really great people.

Cons

Longtime GNE employees think very highly of themselves, are defensive about providing historical information and are not open to new ideas. Functional managers disregard contributors investment in a project and change assignments at will. The patients who supposedly are so important to the company would be appalled to see swag that comprises entire wardrobes of some employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Roche merger is a good opportunity to get rid of dead wood.

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Having worked in operations for eight years in Vacaville, South San Francisco and Oceanside, South San Francisco is by far the best location and still has a strong Genentech culture, Outside of San Francisco the culture is less noticeable, but in general People are nice, benefits are good not great. Ho-Ho's are nice , work can be challenging, co-workers are supportive

    Cons

Working in Vacaville or Oceanside pay is low, stock options are almost non existent, weak culture, poor management, management shoots from the hip with no clear plan or strategies. Managers are not leaders but "yes" men and women. Nearly impossible to advance to a new position unless you are part of the "in crowd". If you want the five star rating work in South San Francisco, Vacaville and Oceanside are disappointments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make an effort to strengthen the culture at Vacaville and Oceanside, allow internal applicants to advance their careers, improve contractor workers work conditions, fire managers that do not understand metrics and who manage their departments by threatening employees.
