Former Employee - Senior Engineer in Waukesha, WI
Former Employee - Senior Engineer in Waukesha, WI

I worked at Generac Power Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Great product and brand recognition in the market. For an engineer you really get exposed to the full product rather than working on 1 part of the generator.

Cons

Stuck in your position.
EVERYTHING rolls downhill. They hire more and more management, but the responsibilities kept falling more and more on the lower level workers.
Sales dictates Engineering and they do not allow for enough time for testing.

I have been working at Generac Power Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Growing, fast-paced company with a lot of opportunity to grow. Good benefits and a do what it takes to get it done culture. Great products where quality, safety and support are a driving force for development.

    Cons

Given the growth, change is constant and priorities shift. The bigger the organization gets the harder it is to get things done and the longer it takes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

consider ways to take steps out of the process to allow things that move faster. Push some authority and decisions down - too much bottle neck waiting on the top to approve

I have been working at Generac Power Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are good people that are here. Office remodel at corporate headquarters looks nice.

    Cons

Growing to fast and don't know how to handle it. Most salaries below the management level are well below average. IT department is underfunded and over worked. Everyone does the work of 3 to 4 people but are under paid. They concentrate on the upfront cost to much and not the long term. Spent way to much to remodel very old building when they probably could have built a better more efficient facility from scratch. They are buying companies left and right but are not taking the time to integrate them properly. They waste money on useless cosmetic updates like polishing the production floor, but penny pinch on the important stuff. They keep hiring VPs and Directors but no employees to implement and support all their new ideas. Forcing out long term good knowledgeable people so the new management can bring in their friends. HR is way to powerful. Many directors and VPs want to pay their employees mileage for traveling back and forth to their many "local" facilities which are an average of 30-60 minutes apart, but HR says "No we don't pay mileage." Some employees put 2,500+ miles on their personal vehicles with no compensation at all. They are starting to fill open positions with contractors so they don't have to pay them benefits. This leads to lack advancement so a lot careers are in a holding pattern.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually mean it when you say you care about your employees. Pay your employees mileage!!! Deducting it on your taxes doesn't give you that much. Throw out your salary studies you had done in the 90's this is 2014 pay your employees like it is. Actually promote from within instead of hiring from outside first. Stop wasting money on useless cosmetic upgrades and invest the money were it is really needed. Restructure bonus program to be attainable when there aren't any natural disasters to drive sales through the roof.
