I worked at General Cable

Pros

you had great benefits and you also made a good pay for this region

Cons

your body took the abuse from the highly repeditive movement. Even though it was a unionized job you still could easily loose your job by making mistakes.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease up on your workers stop trying to cut pay by brining in new machines so they have to work harder just to get back what they used to make after you do your "time studies"

Those that prosper either become the darlings of Sr Management or hide and just put in their time

    Pros

My facility had some great people who were willing to work to improve conditions and solve problems. Company is VERY Safety conscious and is willing to invest money to get results.

    Cons

You had better be producing results every week or else you are disengaged (unless you have a Sr level protector to keep you off the radar)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Letting a Plant Manager run his kingdom is the root of many problems.

    I worked at General Cable

    Pros

    - Pay is above industry average
    - Internal training offered for Lean/5S/Six Sigma

    Cons

    - Expectation to perform two or three job functions in one role and a lack of understanding when this proves to be impossible at times
    - Management inability to see the issues that keep plant under-performing (such as managers/supervisors hiding the issues instead of bringing them to light and correcting them once and for all).
    - Promotion tracks based on company politics. If you upset the 'apple cart', you are doomed to your position no matter how well you perform nor how qualified you are.
    - Company is more likely to hire from outside than to consider internal promotion for hard-working, well qualified employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at the expectations that are given to your employees and stop overworking them. The lack of internal promotions for people who have struggled for YEARS in GCC is what drives the better employees away (I was one). Give back to your employees and they will return it ten-fold!
