I worked at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

A good place to work for internships and new grads. The 9/80 work schedule (9 hrs/day, every other Friday off) is really nice.

Cons

Not a good place for mid/senior level employees. These are the people that get laid off first when DoD/Govt budgets get cut on a yearly basis. Benefits WERE very good in 2007, but have been cut drastically every year since.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company organization is laiden with problems. The matrix organization where a person doesn't really work for their boss affects promotions and personal growth. A matrix organization can work, if the functional managers keep a close eye on what their people are doing. I have more than 20 years of experience and at one point I was working for a 20-something new grad that had no clue.
I was always impressed with SENIOR management, but middle management has much to be desired, and these are the people that directly impact personal growth.

Worked for 10 years as a software engineer here. Huge company with good pay and benefits. Bad corporate culture.

I worked at General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great vacation, health benefits, work schedule and pay. Interesting problems to solve. Opportunity to get a clearance which might open doors down the road with other defense companies.

    Cons

The vacation hours, health benefits, and schedule flexibility got progressively worse over the 10 years I worked there in order to "be more competitive". Some years they froze pay increases company wide. Huge company with inflexible policies that dictate everything. Numerous layers of management that get progressively more out of touch with operations the higher they go, but are more empowered to make sweeping decisions and frequently do. Training program was a bad joke. IT department blocks employees from using most useful tools.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ditch the formulaic PAR system and pay attention to which employees are good and which ones waste time. Try to be competitive by innovating rather than cutting costs. Recruit talented employees and retain them with a great work env and policies rather than settling for whatever employees will put up with the insane corporate nonsense. Focus on removing roadblocks for your employees who are trying to help you succeed.
