Pros

You can accrue vacation up to twice your annual allotment. Vacation time increases with time of service.

Trying to be more commercial-like in development.

Dev managers like to help you succeed, but this is hit-or-miss depending on which SBU you are in.

Cons

Major government contract house, so work is based on government needs, which right now is very little.
Government wants more COTS and less GOTS
Time cards hinder productivity, mental shutdown after 40 hours.
Too slow to make decisions.
Only time innovation is really done is on a government contract... if you're lucky.
Not really investing in new or innovative technology.
Nickel and dime-ing the benefits.
Can't do anything without a charge number.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job on IRAD investment, integration is all well and good, but not a good long term position.

    Pros

Better than average benefits. Good people to work with. Focused on its primary market. Better In many ways than its predecessor Motorola.

    Cons

Too narrow. Too top heavy. Excess overhead expenses. Rigid, empire building management. Good at small projects, poor at large scale systems efforts. Doesn't really look to long term. Management wants quick returns rather than investing for long haul. People increasingly viewed as disposable liabilities rather than valued for experience. Each section of company is quasi-independent fiefdom. Little cross pollination and no attempt to balance overall needs of company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't think you know it all. Try listening to the people who know what they are talking about. Actually use initiatives like Six Sigma instread of just giving lip service. Don't limit yourself to products. Expand the service sector. Get out of your offices and talk to the troops. Your middle managers are probably lying to you.

    Pros

    - Good salary and benefits

    Cons

    - The company is not doing well so there is no room for advancement or movement within the company.
    - Too many people in management positions. Because there are not enough enginners, we are overburdened but there is no job security.
    - No bonuses

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop overlooking the stresses your employees are under. I understand that the bottom line is money but you won't make any if the employees are overworked and neglected.
