I have been working at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Some of the best and brightest engineers in industry dating back from the old Motorola days.

Cons

Continuous layoffs the past 3 years
Increasing attrition rates of best and brightest engineers
No vision nor hope from executive management on what's next after current large programs hit end of life on current large contracts with big engineering staff (ie. JTRS & MUOS).
Business Development team have failed company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire ex-military folks into leadership positions that have network connections in Goverment.

Used to be a good company (Motorola Government Sector) then deteriorate over the years into an empty shell of itself.

I worked at General Dynamics C4 Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Used to be a great place to work for in terms of benefits, compensation and being part of something with national importance.
    2. Many, many smart engineers

    Cons

    1. Usually not the best management at the lower level and the top management lacks vision, guts, ability to think outside the box to take advantage of the incredible resources. The resources that Motorola has assembled at this campus and then upon inertia, GD has built upon for a little while, until GD corporate culture kicked in.
    2. No ability or the will to penetrate adjacent markets that have similar needs as the markets GD is playing in.
    3. Complete lack of investment in human resources and intellectual property.
    4. Government contracting mentally from the 90s: “we won’t move a finger unless someone pays for it”. Instead of the approach of investing in products and technologies that can be offered to the Government under more competitive rates, as Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, Lockheed and BEA are doing.
    5. This business unit is bound to fail and be auctioned off or closed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Invest in people and the business; otherwise this business unit will fail.
    2. Select the right people for leadership roles, not based on political affiliations, years at GD, but based on ideas, ability to manage and lead.

    Pros

Great company to work for but has a poor top level management structure. Using recycled Senior Leadership is never a good strategy for success!

    Cons

A ton of red tape to weed through whenever you work for a big company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you have leaders in the organization who are proven to make a positive impact on the growth and future direction of a major company!
