I have been working at General Growth Properties full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Many changes for the better post-bankrupcy. Although rocky at the start, the CEO seems to be steering the ship in the right path, promoting steady growth and healthy company culture.

Cons

Been pigeon-holed in the same position for 5+ years, with little opportunity for upward mobility. Middle management in certain departments are unapproachable and unsupportive.

As a whole company is ok, but the Business Development dept is a nightmare. Marketing is not too far behind.

I worked at General Growth Properties full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Industry resources are abundant. There are some really great people in this company. There are a lot of malls, so you can move around if you want to-

    Cons

    1) Employees are required to work at 2-3 properties, sometimes having to drive 2-3 hours to secondary locations.
    2) When times are tough, instead of pulling everyone together to solve issues they use punishment as a way to motive reps to reach goals.
    3) One size fits all management style which operates to lowest common denominator.
    4) Don't care about the people...just the production.
    5) Leadership is not transparent. Top level executive is rough around the edges.
    6) Poor communication
This was once a family owned business with great values and ethics. It is sad to see how it is now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People in this field are self motivated and they want to achieve. Take care of the employees and they will produce for you! Treat your vendors better. You are losing business because the word is out that the company doesnt treat tenants fairly.

Good company that fell to hard times

I worked at General Growth Properties full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Prior to 2008, fantastic company to work for - great managers, coworkers and interesting projects. Firm made every effort to make workers feel welcomed, good growth opportunities.

    Cons

Post 2008, or the beginning of bankruptcy, the ugly side of management revealed itself. Lack of communication - employees resulted to looking at google alerts and financial news to see if the company was still open. Fear began to creep into the culture which ended up with huge layoff of the workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maintain good communication lines with employees which would quell 80% of uncertainty and fears. Middle managers start making bad decisions and tempers become short when people do not know if they have a job to come back to in the coming weeks.
