Good benefits and lots of food for free. You might be in weight watch pretty soon ...

Opportunities for advancement, but in the end, politics seem to rule

I have been working at General Mills full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great upside on advancement opportunities, a company that largely promotes from within. Great benefits, bonus, and pay packages.

    Cons

Also hires people directly out of college who have no leadership experience at all and puts them in charge of 20-30 hourly employees with varying levels of experience. Very old fashioned politics stifle innovation and leave the company struggling to keep up with the competition and ever changing marketplace. Worklife balance was often an issue at field locations, with huge swings in schedules. Worklife balance was proven less of an issue at Non-production sites in the Minneapolis St. Paul area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to cultivate leaders from within, place less emphasis on what degree someone has and more on proven performance.

I worked at General Mills full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Benefits were fair. Lots of opportunities to take on additional work.

    Cons

New Albany Pillsbury plant very unorganized. Union members not held to contract. Senior management let union members basically do what they please. No accountability for overtime yet junion salaried staff (team leaders) held to reduce overtime. Very much a 'Plan-of-the-Month' style of management. Senior management backs union members - not salaried staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's hard to hit a moving target. Give the floor managers 3 to 6 months to implement a plan and/or project. They need time to put a plan in place, monitor, and make adjustments. Changing the target every 30 days is just setting up the mangers for failure.
