I worked at General Mills full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

--- Great career opportunities and ability to move across departments. I wouldn't say it is "easy" but it is do-able if you prove to management you are capable.
--- Great work-life balance. There is onsite daycare, fitness facility, bank, etc. at the corporate headquarters. Depending on the job, one could work from home. It was nice to be able to work from home when the kids were too sick for school/daycare.
--- Low turnover. Many employees start there when they're 18 and retire there. Love the knowledge base. Some retire and comeback as consultants.
--- CEO, executive management, middle management, etc. are approachable.
--- During the few layoffs General Mills has had, the laid-off employees were often treated with dignity. (Granted this may have differed slightly from one division to the next.) For example, EVERY employee had a meeting with his/her manager no matter if he/she was going to be laid off. The laid-off employee also had the opportunity to work the rest of the day or the rest of the week. The laid-off employee also had the opportunity to say "good-bye".

Cons

--- Some managers are better than others at guiding you on the career tract.
--- Yes, it's a big corporation, so some things move very slowly.

    Pros

Great work life balance, great people to work with, great teams

    Cons

Boring work, individuals feel "overworked" when they put in over 40 hours a week, projects and deadlines can based around individual's personal schedule, causes problems for the rest of the team

I have been working at General Mills full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - friendly employees who are willing to help
    - many jobs are rotational so you get moved to different areas around the company
    - good communication to employees on vision and strategy
    - decent compensation and benefits (401k, medical, etc.)
    - strong emphasis on integrity

    Cons

    - need to have 360 feedback for managers of people. it seems like recent promotions have been based on how well people manage up (but who are generally not great managers of their direct reports).
    - very relationship-based company that can be slow to make decisions
    - ratings are on a curve, so if you do not have a great manager who is an advocate for you, you are likely out of luck until you rotate (hopefully to a better area with a better manager)
    - in general, you need to fit the "general mills" mold and culture to be successful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

focus on developing better managers of people by introducing 360 feedback. people quit their managers more often than they quit their jobs!
