I worked at General Motors as an intern (less than a year)

Pros

Company leasing cars to employees and discounts

Cons

You will never work under 50 hours per week. Too many production workers who don't care about their job, will fight change at every corner, and start conflict.

I worked at General Motors as a contractor

    Pros

Lots of nice people- Many lines form their own bonds and often have their own parties and group actvities
Management isn't too bad-most of the supervisors are nice and work with you
There is a lot of breaks

    Cons

Temporary employees at the Marion, IN plant have no chance of ever getting hired and generally work harder than the full-time employees.
I really enjoyed working this job even as a temporary position, but when offered the chance I didn't return due to the fact that I knew there was no chance of getting hired. As a temporary employee you get no benefits and have no union representation although they make you pay union dues.

GM somehow cannot take the leap to be a great company.

I have been working at General Motors full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

GM still pays better than many companies around Detroit as well as nationally. If you are lucky to be in a good group, you get to do interesting work. For a Mechanical Engineer, cars are among the most interesting things to work on. Detroit suburbs are boring but have many good schools, affordable housing and the state of Michigan is home to good universities.

    Cons

GM is a company to become a "one trick pony." Most employees end up doing the same stuff year after year. It is important to be placed in an important product development group. Otherwise, career can quickly become meaningless. There are many bad managers. Promotions are generally reserved for people involved in cost cutting. Detroit is not a fun city either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees need to be empowered and rewarded. It is important to get rid of old boys clubs within the companies.
