I have been working at General Motors full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Exciting time to be in IT at GM - a lot of opportunity to provide input and shape how IT is done. Career opportunities are great. Benefits and salary are good.

Cons

Management doesn't understand yet what it takes to be a workplace of choice for IT workers. No outside training or reimbursement for professional certifications, or professional organization dues, etc. No free coffee at work (bring your own K-Cups), work-from-home policy sporatic, long hours and no comp time policy, no free holiday parties or gifts/prizes - manty perks that experienced IT workers are accustomed to are not provided.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement anonymous employee surveys to get honest input. Pay for employee certifications, and courses to maintain certifications. Support employee involvement and leadership in professional organizations.

I have been working at General Motors as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

There are some really bright people. You can contact anyone you need to talk to and set up a time to chat (perfect for getting projects done). There are a lot of different departments to work in (testing, validation, design, etc.).

    Cons

Felt like the movie Office Space (like a prison). Everyone seems to be in their fifties and sixties. They are just about to retire. Not that many young people. Very drab, the environment is very gray.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make it nicer to work there. Look to all of these CS companies and how they stock open kitchens and unlimited snacks etc. I would have liked the atmosphere to have been more fun and elevated.
