Pros

The appreciation shown by patients and families. Otherwise, a terrible place to work.

Cons

Ridiculous workloads, non-exempt employees working without compensation, blatant disrespect of management towards their employees, ignorant management, firing of good, hardworking people for absurd reasons, and a generally hostile working environment.

Advice to Management

Listen to your employeees. Your hired them because because of the knowledge, experience and good character they possess; these are the same reasons they should be listened to and heard when they have problems and concerns. To stand up in front of a room of professional adults and refer to their concerns as "bitching and moaning" is childish, ignorant and simply unacceptable.

    Pros

Flexible work hours. No one closely watching over your shoulder. Good pay. Do not have to drive long distances between patients. Will see a wide variety of patient diagnoses. Job security is very good. We are in great need of physical therapists and nurses. Money is much better than a clinician could make working at an outpatient clinic.

    Cons

Too much paperwork. Communication between office and field clinicians not always good. Too many meetings. Annual employee reviews and raises are not given on a timely basis. Often times there is poor communication between clinicians seeing the same patient, particularly between nurses and physical therapists.

    Advice to Management

Pay more atttention to the needs of your field clinicians. They ultimately make or break your company. Put just as much effort into hiring and keeping your employees as you do marketing to referral sources. If you don't have the field staff to see all your patients, you overwork your clinicians, they become overly stressed, and begin looking for work elsewhere.

    Pros

Most patients are enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

The person responsible for assigning work (patients) can make or break you. If you are his or her buddy, the cases can be given to you within a 10 mile radius and the patients living on the other side of town can be given to others. Since you are paid on a per visit basis, one nurse or therapist can see 6 patients in 4 hours, while another nurse or therapist would see 6 patients in 6-7 hours due to all the time spent driving. Driving time is down time.

    Advice to Management

Improve the retirement plan. Gentiva does not contribute anything to your retirement until employed for one year. If you don't stay for 5 years you don't get to keep all of the part contributed by the employer. If you opt out of taking the health benefits, thus saving Gentiva lots of dollars, they give you absolutely nothing. This is unfair. They save 7-8,000.00 and they can't give an employee $500.00 for jumping on their spouses health care plan? In the new employee handbook there is only one paragraph, two sentences, regarding the retirement plan. One would think they could, perhaps, be a little more thoughtful regarding their retirement plan??
