    Pros

    You are the only one limiting what you can achieve. Often positions are created built around a person's talent. If you can put together a strong case of a particular need not being met within the organization, they give you a shot.

    Cons

    Office politics; the best candidate doesn't always get the job; favoritism among teams plays in. Executive management can/does override collective whole of a group when determining candidates to hire.

    Advice to Management

    Invest more in the opinions of the people staffed on your teams; those working in the trenches day to day are often more accurate about who will/won't work in a role.
