I worked at GeoDecisions

Pros

Ability to grow technical skills. There is opportunity to learn new skills in and around GIS, and in and around related technologies. The atmosphere is pretty good, friendly staff. Headquarters location is pretty good, the commute in the harrisburg area west shore isn't bad by standards of larger cities. There is opportunity for varied assignments among different industries and clients. The company relies a little too much on methodologies, they can be very regimented in terms of approach to business development and project execution.
Partners with ESRI. Will get little opportunity to work with non-ESRI technologies. Starting to look at other platforms.

Cons

Company is starting to churn through staff - turnover

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value the staff and promote loyalty to staff, not just from staff

Geodecisions is slow to reward creativity and accomplishment but fast to punish policy and procedural errors.

I have been working at GeoDecisions

    Pros

Subject matter experts in Geo Enabled transportation systems. Allow some flexibility in working from home.

    Cons

Excessive meetings, micromanagement, questionable technical competence of Project Managers and more senior levels. Low level of compensation as compared to market rates. Allow employees little leeway in their job or schedule and little independence in how they perform it..
GD is penny wise and dollar foolish. It watches employee expenses very closely and denies many expenses that would be deemed fair by neutral observers.

Company tends to focus on software independence at the expense of their
customers. They take on jobs that can be done with 1/3 of he staff and 1/4 of the time and budget. By using "open" tools (not really open) they have to keep reinventing the wheel thus costing their customers a bundle.
Also, they alienate experienced and capable creating a high turnover of employees. They then try to pass the costs for their mistakes on to their customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire yourselves and get a new crew in, but don't hire them yourselves, get some honest high level help from very competent Human Resources professionals. Give yourself a modest golden parachute and go home. You will be doing the company a great favor.

I have been working at GeoDecisions as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Some of the ideas that come of this small company are brilliant. They do GPS and GIS applications you are given good amount of liberty to express you ideas and are valued of what your bring to the table. Some of the applications that are built and prototype are cutting edge technologies.

    Cons

You always closely interact with the marketing guys, who promise a lot of stuff to the clients but without consulting the technical team leaving a lot of unpleasant work atmosphere. The marketing team has landed themselves and the technical team in trouble because of that . They don't have a lot of money in the commercial projects that they undertake so beware. Otherwise! an excellent place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the innovation. Get a new marketing team who is more Internationally savvy if you want to compete in a global arena. You are a great American company with a lot of potential that you can offer to the world. You also have the technical capability, please utilize and Thank you for having me.
