I have been working at George Fox University

Pros

Nice work environment with generally dedicated colleagues. People care about the overall mission of the University. Department is close-knit group of friends.

Cons

Overworked and underpaid compared to the vast majority of colleagues. Administration has inconsistent focus on marketing and financial bottom-line; on the one hand the low student-faculty ratio is touted while its labeled as unsustainable internally.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify and narrow the mission of the University. Eliminate programs and remote campuses that don't fit the vision, regardless of whether or not they are cash-cows. Increasing selectivity and attracting better students who are willing to pay for a better education will enable you to bring compensation up to peers. Relying on the good will of faculty to tolerate being underpaid and overworked in the guise of some spiritualized commitment is inappropriate.

I have been working at George Fox University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people you get to work with are fantastic. GFU is a faith-based organization, allowing for a lot of conversations and support related to spirituality (prayer, ministry, etc.). Those in Administration, Student Life, and Academic Affairs want to be here and are committed to creating a great experience for their colleagues and areas served (students, families, alumni, external connections).
There is a lot of support from your supervisors to develop and grow in your position and as a person.

    Cons

Due to size and budget (this is a non-profit), there isn't a lot of room for advancement in your position; most move to other departments, or leave and possible come back. Salary is low (again, non-profit). The Benefits package takes a lot of your paycheck as well (just under a third). A lot of issues with Human Resources making mistakes on documents and missing critical details, so always check everything twice.
If you are salaried work life balance is difficult as the cultural norm is to work more hours (avg. 45/wk).
You will wear a few different hats in your role because of limited resources, which can be overwhelming and add to frustration with working extra hours.
Too data heavy - management struggles to consider the values and purpose of certain activities when they get too focused on numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be open to feedback and the idea that you aren't doing everything perfectly. It is important to look at how the entire system works together to alleviate pressure on student life staff, faculty, and the expectations of students in attendance.
