I have been working at George Washington University Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Good hospital, mostly amazing staff, some icu staffing a bit stuck up and rude.

Cons

More employees needed for job. Very busy hospital with small staff equals hell some days

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to lower level. They experience operations daily and have a better understanding than you who sit at desks all day.

    Pros

The best thing about working at the hospital is that it is right next to the orange and blue line metro stop and you are usually able to get time off when you want it.

    Cons

The employees are not valued by the management. The pay was not competitive with other hospitals in the area. There was not any potential for promotion. There is not a garage attached to the hospital and the only parking garage for the employees to use was $10 a day with the discount.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward employees for there loyalty to the company. Increase the salaries of the staff. Provide a better parking solution for employees who may have to drive to work.

    Not a nursing-friendly environment

I worked at George Washington University Hospital

    Pros

    Excellent fellows and physician network

    Cons

Nurse Management rules by fear and intimidation- shifty stories abound, good example: nurse is four months away from retirement, w/30+ years in her position as nurse manager of an outpatient unit, her positon is "disolved," a temporary non-nurse is brought aboard to cover duties while she is re-instated as a staff nurse. This nurse retires and pension is not averaged over previous 3 years salary, but instead is based upon staff nurse position held for four months, a 50% pay cut. 31 days post-retirement her position is reinstated and filled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good nurses who have other options jump ship; pay attention to employee turnover, it should be less than 5%.
