I worked at George Washington University full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

GWU is located in a nice area of DC. While there were few place to eat or shop off-campus ten years ago, this is completely changed. There are night classes available and the benefits package is very good.

Cons

There can be a fair amount of politics involved. Overall the campus runs ok, but there is a good deal of poor management. Things get more political and difficult as you move up the food chain. I had a hard time getting enough time in order to pursue my classes, and you need to fight for that time because it's the biggest benefit.

    Pros

The location is great. The people are professional and experts in their field. If you take advantage of the discounted education, this can be a great place to work.

    Cons

If you don't have a Ph.D, you end up taking on more administrative duties.

People play politics instead of work

    Pros

The education benefits are kind of worth it if you are into international relations or media and public affairs. Close to Metro with tons of restaurants nearby.

    Cons

It really depends on the department that you are in but generally speaking people are more concerned with playing politics and breaking even instead of doing the work that needs to be done. Lots of people also love to pretend to play the role of "leader" but in actuality are just cowardly sycophants with no real direction or goal. Lots of behind-the-back talks and gossip which is just deplorable and unprofessional. I could care less about what X in accounting said to Y. Communication is also a big problem at the school but that plays hand in hand with the overall cowardliness of the staff. No one knows what to do or how to do it. Truly and exemplary instance of Academia in general. It's not much better at other schools.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You guys need to grow up and start looking forward. Real life is not highschool 2.0. Stop promoting idiots into management positions. Contrary to this, a lot of management is way too old to be running anything. the 1950's ended a while ago. There is a reason this is a third rate school which no amount of fund raising can fix. Also, you may want to stop cheating on the US News and World Report rankings or at least not get caught next time.
