I worked at Georgia-Pacific Corporation

Pros

Convenient location from the MARTA downtown ATL. Nice views from the building.

Cons

There is no long term strategy for people retention. It is all about the bottom line. Priorities change often, and they do not understand how to generate value through brands. If you join do not keep any personal items in your office they are notorious for asking you to leave immediately without any previous notice or cause.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

People make companies, not sure how you expect to grow when you undervalue the most precious asset. Good luck!

I have been working at Georgia-Pacific Corporation

    Pros

Stable company, and since Koch buyout not a public company so GP is insulated from the ebbs and flows of publicly traded companies.

MBM is a nice philosophy, but not practiced consistently or when it may deter management from a decision that they want to make.

Some good people that want to make a difference

    Cons

If you are not senior management, you are nobody. No bonuses, no communication, no salary increases for most (in full disclosure, I was given a raise last year - first since the Koch acquisition - but also was told that no one else in my group would be receiving one, and that no one had received one since the acquisition)

VERY BAD MORALE among the workers

Declining benefits - which used to be pretty strong....now average to below average (health care providers, 401 K management company have changed to less attractive options.....stingier vacation accumulation, no more charitable donation match program, etc)

VERY POLITICAL - to the detriment of getting the job done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Won't matter. They don't listen, and if they did listen, they wouldn't care.

Management doesn't follow their own principles

I have been working at Georgia-Pacific Corporation

    Pros

There are pockets of excellence and some groups are really trying to make the company into something special.

    Cons

It is like a great ship lost in the doldrums with no rudder and no wind in the sails. What communication comes from corporate and even within the local site is confusing and often conflicting. What is 'right' one day becames a mistake the next. No matter how hard you try, someone is always going to change the rules and you will once again 'fail'. The Koch owned company has a great corporate culture on paper but very little of it is actually put into practice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow the MBM principles in all that you do, not only when it is convenient. All of the time and money invested in this training is wasted if the rank and file see that you give it only lip service and invoke it only when it 'aligns' with what you want to do.
Empower your work force! In the last few years, this has been eroding steadily. Approvals are required for even the smallest of things. It feels like there is zero trust and more time is spent approving things multiple times and wasting time waiting for top management to approve even the smallest things. This demoralizes the employees and turns everyone into plain old workers that have to turn off their judgement and brains when they walk in the door.
