I have been working at Gilead Sciences full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - good pay and benefits
    - bagel wednesdays
    - good peer group
    - leadership at the very top are very competent and are willing to take risks. This attribute is why Gilead has been very successful

    Cons

    - poor middle managers that lack vision and are in their positions due mainly to seniority
    - lack of opportunities for career advancement or growth, especially for employees coming from other companies
    - new ideas are seldom welcomed. There is the "Gilead way" of doing things and that is only way.
    - poor work life balance for those who are effective at their roles. The ineffective members quietly tag along and are not given the proper feedback because of fear of losing more staff in an already high employee attrition environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value experience even if it comes from other companies. While Gilead as a whole has been successful, an environment of not welcoming new ideas and allowing seniority to take priority of merit is not sustainable. Remember that the talented and passionate staff are the ones that will challenge the "Gilead way" and try to improve things. Alienating those will only lead to an environment of mediocre "yes men". This is likely not how you would want to grow the organization.
