I worked at Gilead Sciences full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Good ESPP, 401K plan, backup care benefits- nice location, club fitness available, bagels on Wed.

Cons

People who have been working for the company for 8-10 years are usually in a position of power and tend to abuse their direct reports. These managers spend their time at the gym, pretending to work, bragging about their stock options and RSUs - how much they have in their bank account. Toxic environment for someone who is a hard worker and ambitious...very discouraging...

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on keeping good managers - ask the rights questions to your employees about their working environment and their managers's behavior. Do some clean up - also, keep in mind that people are scared of losing their jobs, so whatever you do has to be done correctly- not just a survey every 3 years or a 360 peer review, BUT a skip level or one on one with HR.

I worked at Gilead Sciences as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Nice campus, and subsidized cafeteria.

    Cons

Disorganized, too busy to help new employees, inadequate resources to get work done. Byzantine procedures. Management is operating in crisis mode, issuing blanket orders that can't be implemented without huge delays in lab chemists being able to get work done. Very poor compensation and treatment of contractors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work in partnership with lower level employees to find workable solutions. Make practices easier to follow and more efficient.

I have been working at Gilead Sciences

    Pros

relatively good benefits. Shut down between Christmas and New Year's but you won't have a break until May thereafter. some smart co-workers - especially the scientists. Decent compensation especially stock. Cafeteria is subsidized. Free flow of coffee and tea. Lots of food. Subsidized MBA on campus.

    Cons

very petty coworkers. insanely hierarchical. archaic systems and 100% manual processes. very political - feels like a Dilbert cartoon all the time. Empire building and watching your back is the rigor. Meetings to get anything done. The meetings to debrief what was done.
