Extremely fun, rewarding place to work, but lacking strong managers

I worked at Gilt City as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The culture is great. There's a strong emphasis on playfulness and creativity, but still an expectation to work efficiently and get things done. That was especially apparent when the company mandated that all employees — even those not directly involved in the sales process, learn how to use SalesForce. Toward the end of my time there, you could tell upper management was really pushing for a shift toward efficiency and better pipeline management. Other than that, expect lots of company parties, in-office events and training activities.

    Cons

Within three months, half of my team or the people I worked with had left the company for other opportunities. It seems like everyone from the "original" startup team has moved on due to growing pains in the company. Overall, Gilt City lacks a strong middle management team. As a result, there's a big disconnect between upper management and the rest of the company. If you're going for an entry to mid-level job, expect to be underpaid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Build out a strong middle management team who will STAY at the company. Maintain the great culture.

    Unstable environment, wrong management

I have been working at Gilt City

    Pros

Bagel Friday's may be fun and random food leftovers are great. Vibrant office environment. Fun people to work with.

    Cons

Constant change in management and ability to allow people to maintain their roles and positions of management due to close relationships or friendships with the boss is a huge HR issue. It is a cut throat sales environment where some fight over accounts and will underhandedly try to take an account or lead from you. While it's great to think about the bottom line - it shouldn't at the risk of affecting the end product/event or the happiness of your employees. It is no secret that the turn over rate here is high - and it's due to the fact that there is no real trust with your peers and it has become a gossip fueled environment. Happy I moved on from here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on promoting those that have dedicated themselves to the organization versus playing favoritism. Some people are clearly a wrong fit (personality, inability to work with others, no major wins within their entire time there) yet they are "protected" or placed on a team they have no business being on (no specific experience) which will lead to confusion, unrest and more departures.
