I have been working at Gilt Groupe

Pros

- the company is breaking ground in the e-commerce field
- lots of very smart people to work with and learn from
- many opportunities to advance and learn - career progression is very fast here
- training and development is getting better as the company grows
- lots of communication - both formal and informal

Cons

- not a lot of structure, so if you like traditional organizations, this probably won't work well for you
- it does not have as much of the start-up feel as it used to, but it is less chaotic as a result

Gilt = beautiful hi-fashion model who loves everyone on the outside, an anorexic model that sticks to her cliques inside

I have been working at Gilt Groupe

    Pros

Great people--they are smart, connected, creative, alternative, ambitious and fun to work with for the most part.

    Benefits are decent.

Flexible work schedule (but this is highly dependent upon which dept. your work for/who you report to).

Great opportunities for advancement QUICKLY -- if you are a favorite or "loved" by senior management. Otherwise, no amount of hard work and results will get you there no matter how hard you try.

    Cons

Challenging work/life balance. You are expected to work around 10 hours everyday, even put some time in when you are home after that or on the weekend.

No cash bonuses unless you are in upper management.

Not enough opportunity for advancement unless, as I said above, you are a "darling" of upper management. Lots of hard work does not necessarily get you recognition or reward here.

There is no clear path to follow for career advancement and I have seen people who have worked diligently, creatively and effectively on huge projects only to be passed over for well-deserved promotions and pay increases. Office politics have become very catty and difficult to navigate.

It is a more culturally diverse workforce than you generally find in fashion/retail companies however, there are barely any diversity candidates in upper and middle management. Not sure what that's about...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop playing favorites with staff. Start getting more in touch with all levels of employees again.

The cool start-up vibe that made Gilt a great place to work at during the first two years is gone and it is now a corporate culture trying to act like a cool start-up.

    I worked at Gilt Groupe

    Pros

Competitive salary (especially when compared to other retailers)
    Discounts on merchandise
Convenient location off the 6 train

    Cons

Similarity to "Devil Wears Prada" attitude of management is shocking - disrespect was shown to assistants on a daily basis; it is often the support staff that are blamed for management's errors

Talk about long hours! - 8-6:30 is expected, and many people do not take breaks or lunch. Work/life balance? There's something else besides "work" called "life"?

Time off was frowned upon - often when someone called in sick, others in the office would gossip about where they were, insinuating that they were on an interview for another job (wonder why?)

Cutthroat atmosphere and "blame game" means that others sometimes try to sabotage their colleagues... no teamwork makes for dismal morale. It wasn't uncommon to see people crying after being publicly disrespected.

No feedback for positive contributions to the company, but bullied, shouted at, and often blamed.

Poor work environment: Manic atmosphere of running around, and due to rapid hiring and little space, people are crammed into an overcrowded work area with little ventilation, often no windows, and an open office area, almost like a factory. To top it off, there aren't enough bathrooms for the number of employees, so the bathroom is often filthy, with trash left on the floor by the end of the day, and in dire need of an upgrade - spaces in between the doors mean you can see people inside of the stalls!

Overall, this was the most abrasive work environment I've seen to date - yes, pay is important, but office culture is what decides how happy you'll be at a company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees and treat them with respect - by making it clear to the staff that they are an essential part of the success of your business, you improve your work environment, increase productivity, and ultimately ensure the positive growth of your company and retainment of good talent.
