I have been working at Glide full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Feeds the homeless. Volunteer department is really great. Health Clinic is world-class. World-wide famous Glide Ensemble (gospel choir). Everything is geared toward helping people become better people. Cecil Williams. You can bump into Maya Angelou, Warren Buffet, Nancy Pelosi and many other well-known people any day - you never know. Always interesting things going on.

Cons

High turnover of upper management as well as lower-level staff. They have split personality disorder: are they a charity, or a church? Executive level management really doesn't know what their doing or have no real direction for the staff. Certain people at the executive level refuse to retire (and they should have a long time ago). They have no shared vision of where the company is or should be headed.

I worked at Glide part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Incredibly friendly and diverse staff. Even the upper level management people are interesting and passionate and will smile at you in the halls. So many programs (80+) and departments, always room for moving up. The most upfront and jarring experience with direct social services that I've had. Well structured departments and strong mentoring. Very decent pay and healthy office culture for the non-profit world.

    Cons

The neighborhood is wild, no surprises there. The environment, both on the streets and inside, is riddled with drugs/alcohol/mental illness and makes it a very unpredictable work environment. You need to be tough and confident.

    I worked at Glide

    Pros

A great place to volunteer at but not to work for. Diverse staff. A nice get-together for all new staff members (called "The Cultural Journey"). Free holiday giveaways. Feeds the homeless. Relaxed culture (tattoos? piercings? sweatpants? super short denim skirt? sure, that's all fine). Variety of programs offered.

    Cons

Very disorganized. Chaotic. Stressful. Lack of communication. Questionable ethics. (For example: Instead of paying you for overtime, they will simply tell you to take an extra hour or two for your unpaid lunch.) Turnover is super high because the environment is incredibly toxic and negative. Located in a bad neighborhood. Low pay and benefits for how hard you'll have to work. ALWAYS short-staffed - one person doing a job meant for 2 or 3.
