I have been working at Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

The benefits and compensation are among the best for nonprofits in the Bay Area. Additionally, there are Park Day outings 3 times a year. Fort Mason is a wonderful location, too. The people and atmosphere are great, too.

Cons

Upward mobility may be limited unless a position is specially created. There are also multiple departments working as separate "silos" that make interdepartmental cooperation difficult.

    Pros

Stellar benefits, tolerant of unconventional people, accessible senior staff. Great opportunities for training with an eye on using position as a stepping stone. Talented people abound.

    Cons

Advancement is driven more by politics than qualifications. Different departments operated in their own vacuum sometimes. Low pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the hard work we do under intensely physically and extreme environmental conditions when taking into account compensation.

I worked at Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Co-operative atmosphere amongst fellow employees. Yearly "Holiday Party." High expectations of performance. Our "product" is exceptional. You will feel an amazing amount of pride in the outcome of the projects. High expectations of manner in which you treat each other, very respectful. Humor welcomed and appreciated. You will see donations coming in both large and small and never feel that the money is being waste. Locations can be breath taking.

    Cons

Sadly, you will often be mistaken for the Presidio Trust. The location sucks - hard to get to. Because they are small and the positions specialized there isn't alot of opportunity for promotion. Plus, people ten to stay for a long time. However, the skills you learn here will help you if you choose to move to another organization. But because you will love it so much you may never leave.
