Pros

Extremely smart, motivated people all around you. Innovative solutions that truly add value for the client. Pushed every day to be better, smatter, faster, etc.

Cons

No room for slackers. Extremely long and hard working hours. Expectation of perfect work. There is no work / life balance. But, that is to be expected in this industry in this position.

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Well established processes Stringent recruitment process ensure you work with very talented people Transportation facility

    Cons

One's experience depends on the Division and Department, which you join. People are highly opinionated. Culture is very harsh on employees and people get fired for no reason. Lot of teams do not have local managers. With no local support, you could be scapegoat. You can easily get fired for someone else's mistake or even lack of visibility. Management does not provide any opportunity to explain the situation. Salary hikes and bonuses are very low. It depends on your Division / Dept. Low quality and repetitive work done out of Bangalore.

Be wary of Operations if you are Commercial or Opinionated as that wont be rewarded and you'll soon be frustrated

I have been working at Goldman Sachs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great name and brand in the industry A lot of hardworking and smart colleagues who you can learn from Plenty of lectures, initiatives and guest speakers If you are junior your underpaid but if senior you are overpaid

    Cons

Lives off its name and so knows most people are scared to leave No Independent thinkers just Yes men/women on the Operations side Juniors are worked extremely hard with the hours to match but underpaid compared to other companies particularly on the bonus side. Most junior staff don't have experience outside GS as they came straight from University to Grad Scheme so think the Intense culture is normal. External hires notice immediately that a lot of people have drunk the Kool Aid. Great if you are senior but if junior on the Operations side your career is not in your hands but the ability of your manager to promote your work well upwardly which means progression not meritocratic You basically spend your day as a call centre for the revenue generating functions so expect to pander to them no matter how junior they are. Remeber they own the PnL!!!

    Advice to Management

To Operations management you have a lot of talented juinior staff so let them play their part in the success of the company. Stop the micro managing and secrecy and stand up to the demands of the business when they don't serve to benefit the firm. Loosen the ranes on the experienced, ambitious and talented or they will move across to a revenue generating function or externally to find more responsibility.
