I worked at Golfsmith full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

An upside of working at Golfsmith are the relationships developed with those outside of Golfsmith such as vendors, customers, suppliers and other golf enthusiasts. Golfsmith's heritage of two brothers building a fairly successful mail order business out of their garage is an interesting story but is now forgotten and completely irrelevant to the current Golfsmith culture.

    Cons

Everything else about working for Golfsmith is downside. The lack of leadership is the paramount issue at Golfsmith. Leadership's resistance and incapability to implement any meaningful strategic plan, process or system to run a fairly straightforward retail entity is embarrassing. It really does a disservice to every employee and those who do business with Golfsmith and ultimately has the most negative affect on the customer. The customers that will never again shop at Golfsmith far outnumber those that have had even one positive shopping experience with Golfsmith. The culture at the Golfsmith headquarters in Austin is quite toxic due to the ineffective leadership, the general malaise and complacency that permeates the entire organization. I would advise any prospective employee to do their due diligence before joining this sub-standard company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To every current C-level leader at Golfsmith: Please stay in your current role. Please do not poison any other company in any other industry with your lack of retail business management knowledge, your inept leadership skills, your immaturity, your inflated ego, your greed and deception. Your lack of business ethics and general moral fiber is reprehensible and best kept insulated in the cesspool that is Golfsmith.

    Pros

Fun industry to be a part of in selling golf equipment. Customers are buying something they want and not what they need. Growth potential as there aren't any dominant retailers in the industry.

    Cons

At the moment, a negative work environment of department silos with accusations and blame being the dominant activity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People are the most important part of any company and that was forgotten. Poor business decisions can be overcome, but not taking care of your middle-management and associates may be irreversible.
