Former Employee - Store Manager in Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Goodwill full-time (less than a year)

Pros

stands behind mission to help community, everybody very friendly,

Cons

long hours, stores are filthy- people running goodwill think just because it's a thrift store they don't have to be clean (?), no set schedule, poor hiring and not being honest in interviewing (see below) leads to high turn-over, all stores run however the mgr feels- no price structure- made customers upset and confused

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest during interviewing. I was told no overtime expected and bonuses were "practically guaranteed". Nothing could be farther from the truth. I never worked less than 46 hrs (for same pay) and NEVER saw a bonus in 6 months. And when you try to take off on a company holiday, you are frowned upon for not working those additional hours too

The mission of the company is good, but the employee pay is shoddy.

I have been working at Goodwill part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Helping others to become employable in today's job market is a rewarding job.
There is an employee discount for all re-sale merchandise.
The location is central and easy to get to.

    Cons

Pay disparity is a problem, which hurts moral.
Any bonuses are based on a percentage of what a person makes. A 2% bonus for a part or flex-time employee making just over $8 per hour is insignificant.

Former Employee - Job Coach in Santa Rosa, CA

I worked at Goodwill full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Well regarded nonprofit has a strong presence in the community; offers a lot of support and training to people looking for work and job opportunities for people who might otherwise have trouble getting hired. They give people a chance.

    Cons

Salary and benefits are a bit below average; some arbitrary decisions have been made by the leadership while employees are sometimes not given adequate information. The required "safety meetings" were a joke, and some of the trainings were not very useful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees might benefit from less "general" training and could get more focused (online or other) learning opportunities.
