Former Employee - Store Manager in Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Goodwill full-time for less than a year

Pros

stands behind mission to help community, everybody very friendly,

Cons

long hours, stores are filthy- people running goodwill think just because it's a thrift store they don't have to be clean (?), no set schedule, poor hiring and not being honest in interviewing (see below) leads to high turn-over, all stores run however the mgr feels- no price structure- made customers upset and confused

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest during interviewing. I was told no overtime expected and bonuses were "practically guaranteed". Nothing could be farther from the truth. I never worked less than 46 hrs (for same pay) and NEVER saw a bonus in 6 months. And when you try to take off on a company holiday, you are frowned upon for not working those additional hours too

I have been working at Goodwill full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The mission. The business experience. The operations experience. What you can learn by paying attention to day-to-day operations of the company.

    Cons

Poor pay. Unflexible schedules. Uncooperative management. Disproportionate African American employment. Little room for advancement. Promotions/Raises only happen on a yearly basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management is not open to ideas or new ways to do things. Most management is so concerned with the bottom line and profits that they miss ideas or new methods that would actually be MORE efficient, and produce higher profits.

I worked at Goodwill part-time for less than a year

    Pros

got a job minimum wage. long hours

    Cons

the industry does not stick to its core values, beliefs, they talk to you as if you were beneath them when you ask about hiring practices. to get a job is like doing insider trading with the stock market. the San Antonio area is very bad about job selections always the inside first over and over again, and whats so bad about it its for the same job over and over again.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

give some intense training on the hiring practices. teach the supervisors not to be untruthful about the jobs and their postings.
