Thought I'd be there forever, but they didn't want to use my knowledge or skills.

I worked at Goodwill full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

The mission and the associates were the motivating factors for myself.

Cons

The more dedicated you are to their mission, and following corporate standards, the more likely you are to be fired. Investigations should not be finalized based on hearsay, or by people who are not going to gather all the facts. Use investigating tools.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find ways to keep the managers and regional managers from dismissing people who have followed corporate standards, and procedures.

I worked at Goodwill full-time for more than a year

    Pros

They have benefits. You get a paid break every two hours.

    Cons

The people who get promoted are the ones that try to get others in trouble. You have to work 28 hours a week to get benefits which would be fine but many employees are classified as 24 hour a week employees and then forced to work 40 hour weeks without benefits.
    Strict rules about everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward people who work hard instead of the employees who to get their coworkers in trouble.
Pay hard workers a bit more so you won't have so much turn over.

I have been working at Goodwill full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    It's a job.
You get to go home after work.
    They hire lots of minorities.

    Cons

A Draconian work environment, in which employees are berated in front of other employees, and reward and punishment is handed out arbitrarily.
Employees are treated as cattle, threatened regularly, and forced to attend an hour long weekly meeting even if it they have the day off..
Worse still, is the culture of racial discrimination. And I don't use that term lightly.
If you are white, you have zero chance for advancement, and you have a huge bullseye on your back.
And sooner or later they find a way to get rid of you.
Same thing happens if you have been there long enough to make more than minimum wage .
And forget overtime. If you work overtime, they just have you come in late another day or leave early.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

First of all, realize that your employees are a needed resource and not a necessary evil.
Second, stop the illegal racial discrimination rampant in most of the stores.
Third, bring Goodwill into this century. Little has changed in decades in the way Goodwill operates,
making it an inefficient business model. Last, hire from within.
