    Pros

Good benefits; Autonomy; Friendly staff; Can build your skills if you take the initiative to do so on your own without assistance from management

    Cons

Little room for advancement; Non-competitive salaries; Heavy politics; High-turnover; No mentoring; Egos (more so in the Administrative Dept. than amongst the lawyers!); Understaffed; Manager are not qualified and drive out great talent across the firm; Low morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on currently ineffective and poor, communication, management and leadership skills.

I have been working at Goodwin Procter

    Pros

There are quality, talented people. Pay is comparable with industry, even on high side for same job in other industries. Benefits are comparable.

    Cons

Administrative staff is completely overworked and under staffed. Upper management is generally uncaring and incompetent. Good people are leaving left and right and there is no effort to stop it or try to address morale. Career advancement is impossible. Rarely promote from within. Have seen consistent hiring of under-qualified candidates into positions much higher than their experience warrants when internal candidates would be much better. Bonus and review process for administrative staff is an abomination. Bad behavior from "rain makers" is acceptable. Administrative staff is told they cannot say "no" to attorneys. No respect for the expertise and input of the administrative staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a huge morale problem with administrative staff. Listen to them and don't let partners steam-roller over administrative staff. Let your experts run the business and think outside the box. We don't have to do what every other firm is doing. Look at the management of the administrative departments and ask yourself why turnover is so bad. Is it normal to have 100% turnover in a department in 2 years? What's the issue? You're paying these directors and chiefs astronomical salaries and they are driving good people out and giving the firm a reputation that makes it difficult to fill open positions.
