Google demands high-quality work with minimal training ("like drinking from a firehose"), but great, people and support!

I worked at Google as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Because one is consistently surrounded by highly intelligent people, I found that there is more than ample opportunity to learn something new & exciting each day.

    Cons

Though it may seem shiny and perfect from the outside, my experience working for Google was more like working for a cluster of small start-ups: inter-team communication was inconsistent and unreliable, bureaucracy was rampant even for small tasks/changes, and opportunities for growth or even lateral movement, both within and cross-team, weren't made apparent.

I worked at Google full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good Compensation and Benefits. Most peers were a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

Flexibility and openness have taken a nose dive as the company became larger and more compartmentalized.

No one wants you to work on "the world's most interesting problems" no matter what their employment ads say.

20% time has become a myth. No one wants you working on their projects, or on your own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop dividing the company, hiding behind locked doors, and touting opportunities which no longer exist

    Neutral Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
