Former Intern - Software Engineer Intern in Mountain View, CA
Former Intern - Software Engineer Intern in Mountain View, CA

I worked at Google as an intern (less than a year)

Pros

Very smart people, great food and other perks (massages!), interesting project, good mentoring for interns, lots of events for interns.

Cons

Company is too big, as an intern interested in joining full-time it is hard to find out what other projects are that people work on. No general talks or internal project sites to look at.

I have been working at Google full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The roles have been challenging, dynamic, interesting, ambiguous and evolving. The people that I've gotten to work with are great (for the most part)--smart, driven, effective--they're what has kept me around for so long.

    Cons

Bias towards the new, shiny, sexy projects often leaves Operations teams and other cost centers at a loss for resources and support. The basic conflict of interest between Ads Sales and Ads Quality/anti-fraud teams is a constant source of frustration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Handle low-performing middle managers more effectively. Understand that everyone knows how poorly a manager scores on their evaluations, so when they're kept around and/or promoted, it reflects poorly on everyone above that's involved.

Current Contractor - Quality Rater in Los Angeles, CA
Current Contractor - Quality Rater in Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Google as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Unlimited perks, cool office, great co-workers, etc. Even working as a contractor is a great experience. Three meals served every day, gym and personal instructors on-site, great coffee, snacks and beautiful surroundings. This is truly an ideal employer that cares about its employees.

    Cons

Not much to add here. I wish that Google would hire more people instead of using contractors. Google is undoubtedly on of the best employers in the world but the use of contractors create a division within the company between "real" Googlers and the contractors doing the grunt work. I'm giving career opportunities a low rating because there's not really a future here as a contractor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want your employees to care about the company and go above and beyond, then do the same for your employees (incl. contractors).
