Pros

Pays very well, excellent benefits, including vacation time.

Cons

- The competition in academia politics is the most vicious and bitter because the stakes are so low.
- The culture has a skewed sense of self importance that borders on delusions of grandeur.
- Filled with sycophants.
- Not a place to work if you have a sense of work pride.

    Pros

Very smart colleagues from impressive and diverse backgrounds. Very high pay and excellent benefits. Green workplace with lots of perks.

    Cons

Rigid, inflexible governance by board and senior management. Little input from lower-level staff in strategic decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication between board and staff. Less control by board members over strategic direction of organization. More collaboration between departments and less emphasis on rigid, hierarchal management structures.

I worked at Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart people doing important work; there are many great people here, who are trying hard to make a big impact and trying to do the right thing.......

    Cons

...... but at almost every turn leadership gets in the way of staff. A new President will be a great start now that McCormick has left and for sure his leadership was the biggest dark cloud over this organization; however it goes beyond this, and the next President will have his work cut out to rebalance the organization in support of doing things right. Common sense is virtually zero because it has been managed out. Things in many Foundations take too long but this place is over the top because of disfunctionality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Board needs to get a much closer pulse of what is happening in the organization and then get the right management team in place. Good things will flow from that. Until that happens little real progress seems likely

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
