I worked at Government of the Northwest Territories

Pros

The benefits package is fairly comprehensive, and overall the quality of like in Yellowknife is excellent.

Cons

Opportunitties for promotion are reserved for friends of friends. There is little in the way of communications that flows from the top down to the bottom. Managers often manage via non-communication,

Advice to Management

Learn to let you employees know what is going on. Things like staff meetings where people let others know what they are working on are good things.

    Pros

Great opportunity to grow and contribute to a small town industry. The GNWT has amazing benefits and training programs to get you up to speed and provide professional training to progress your career.

    Cons

Regular government issues, such as being slow to innovate and having lots of bureaucracy.
Also tough city to live in.

    Advice to Management

Work with other departments better to decrease constant bureaucracy.

    Pros

Pro's. This is hard. They will pay all expenses to bring you to the North.

    Cons

Like entering a time machine and going backwards 40 years.

They will only pay a small percentage of the cost for you to leave, and only after you've been an employee for a number of years. It can cost a family over 40k to leave.

Friends and family hiring club. People in positions they have no qualifications for. Stain on resumes if any future employer is familiar with what passes for 'quality' at the GNWT.

The most qualified staff are the hired consultants from outside the NWT. There are good employees but they get burned out and stomped on quickly.

Shocking amount of racism in the North.

Poor benefits. Many leave before they are vested in the pension. Pharma, counselling, dental are all grossly inadequate. Union is useless.

Very hard reporting to someone with no skills who was given a job by a friend. Professional standards are a joke. Many are proud to wield their power indiscriminately. Lax monitoring and oversight. Human resources is a puzzle, no one is quite sure what purpose they serve except to protect the employer from the employees.

    Advice to Management

    Start over.
