I have been working at Grand Rapids Public Schools part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

some really great committed people work here and despite what you hear the kids can be really great too

Cons

HR is a mess it takes them forever to get things done and the process for new employees is really vague. There is very little information relayed to you before you start working

Advice to ManagementAdvice

have some consistency in HR and try to make rates for new parapros more competitive (especially the bilingual ones).

Go elsewhere, the leadership lacks ability and credibility.

    Pros

There are many opportunities for lateral movement in the organization.

    Cons

The management is very poor. Those chosen to lead are often the poorest performers or those about ready to retire. There is a constant need on the part of management to blame others for mistakes. Additionally, there are very few expectations which are clearly stated. The management often makes decisions based upon pleasing specific people, not doing what is best for the organization or its stakeholders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the superintendent, he is incompetent. Hire management from within, not those who have no experience in the district. Let the teachers teach, instead of having people with no classroom experience decide how things should be done in the classroom.
