I worked at Grand Valley State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work around class schedule, easy work, raise after 2 semesters, not too hard to get days off (well in advance only) or extra shifts, was very nice that since it was for the university they only took out 10-20 bucks a paycheck for taxes, only work every other weekend

    Cons

Raise after 2 semesters, but only 15 cents and has nothing to do with performance. So no matter how hard you work, slackers get the same raise. No training, thrown right into the lions den on day 1. Rules for taking days off for unexpected reasons like sickness, death in family, etc are unreasonable. God forbid you have a weak immune system or a snow storm in west Michigan. Maybe it's just me, but I refuse to risk my life for my job. Luckily it never came to that for me, but I feel sorry for those that it did.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I get that it's a place where 'essential personnel' are required to be there, but have a little lieniancy when it comes to missing work for unexpected reasons. Things come up that you have to miss work for, especially as a student!
