I have worked for GVSU for over 8 years. There have been a few bumps along the way but overall, it is an enjoyable place

Pros

Good people in individual departments. Management is generally reasonable.

Cons

Some of the policies seem to be from when the school was a small college. Some ideas seem out of date

Advice to Management

Update some policies, hire more people inHRO

    Pros

Once you're in you can be there for life, without hassle. Faculty easily tenured and promoted, with little accountability or expectations for improvement

    Cons

No new blood, people stay forever and work beyond their effectiveness/competency; decisions are made by personalities, not by evidence, best practice or bench-marking with 'like' institutions. Graduate programs/students not recognized or promoted, GVSU grew out of the 'liberal arts college' model decades ago but no one wants to acknowledge this or give up this older image of GVSU so we are stuck in the past, not changing for the future

    Advice to Management

Change the mission/values of the university to reflect its size and scope... we are the 8th largest Master's comprehensive-large classified institution in the USA but we still act like a small college. Time to change leadership, policies, and practices and aim higher than just state boundaries.

  2. A place of resources and life, people are content.

    Pros

Stability of Allendale - primarily from the school's institution.
Stability with Grand Rapids as a growing metropolitan. Grand Valley has the advantage of being both "University of Michigan" creating Allendale to be its own type of "Ann Arbor" and "Wayne State University" utilizing Grand Rapids as its own type of "Detroit".
There is flexibility with work schedule and life balance. This come from a good mix of professionals and college students existing and utilizing the same space.
Grand Valley capitalizes on the opportunity to progress with Grand Rapids

    Cons

Change takes time and the right people supporting. Understand the politics to have change occur.
