Greater Chicago Food Depository – “Good work but weirdly managed”
Pros
Working here gives you instant cred, people are impressed. There is always plenty to do, no opportunities to waste time. Mission to feed the hungry is important.
Cons
It was quickly noticable who was favored and who was not by management. No way to know who gained immediate favor, but if you were, you were fast-tracked to bonuses, promotions, and if you weren't you sat in your position for as long as a decade making barely a cost of living increase in pay. Revolving door for the upwardly mobile.
Advice to Senior Management
Management refused to acknowledge difference between white-collar and blue-collar workers. All-employee meetings were "team building" disasters. They tried to make it all like we were one big team, but that's ignoring the reality of our experiences and day to day work. Class differences between administration and warehouse are facts, and ignoring them won't make them go away and doesn't make you more inclusive, it just makes you look oblivious.
