Current Employee - Civil Engineer in New York, NY

I have been working at Greeley and Hansen full-time for more than a year

Pros

-Opportunity for exposure to all facets of engineering consulting (project delivery, BD, client management) early on in one's career- but need to speak up regarding interest.
- Never felt like a cog in the system while at this firm; individual attention provided; observed the impacts of a formal annual performance review and goal setting, allowing folks to identify their strengths and leverage them.
- Willingness to support (financially) innovative business line development

Cons

- Recent retirement of number of senior engineers and principals left gaps in specific niche technical areas
- Management teams revert to old behaviors when not reminded of commitment to change

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- Increase transparency of decisionmaking processes - Just share more with all levels -even the ones that dont need to know
- Continue to empower employees, seek out the geographies where this is not yet the case and force change
- Communally celebrate individual achievements on behalf of the firm.

I have been working at Greeley and Hansen full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Was once a rewarding place to work staffed with numerous great engineers.

    Cons

The new corporate model no longer stresses engineering. It's all about perception and image. No clear career path. Appears to promote based upon blind loyalty rather than competence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When was the last time the company was recognized for a great engineering achievement? Refocus on the engineering aspect of the business and less time spent wanting to be liked.

Project Managers are Sickly, Stressed, Uptight, Overworked - stay away

I have been working at Greeley and Hansen full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work with great engineers with experience and knowledge. It was a much better place when I joined years ago.

    Cons

No growth opportunity, no appreciation for billable employees, senior management set bad examples, no transparency in salary/raise. They only promote you if you're a proven 'yes' man, and agree to work 80 hours/week and bring home extra work and duties. Lack of social environment despite the spiffy new 'social' cafe, where you only see the same people sitting around chit chatting. It was designed to bring the office members together in a fun social space, but instead you never see some people because they're probably overworked in their office/cubes. Social activities organized by the co seems forceful and awkward. Project managers all seem unhappy, overworked, stressed out, and sickly looking. Other than the fresh college grads, other engineers have seen the abuse and have no motivation and no role models.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember the old core values? Clients don't hire the company, they hire the people. Take care of your employees and your employees will take care of the clients and the clients will take care of you. There are so many talented engineers here, it is a shame that their hard work and talents are not recognized and appreciated. Give them the opportunity. There are many hardworking project managers, appreciate them and take care of their health mentally and physically.
