Pros

The opportunity to work in a health system that has an integrated health plan and delivery system is valuable. The focus on constant process improvement and quality is exciting and makes the work your doing valuable. Group Health has made it evident that the patient experience is of most importance. This is evident throughout the Co-op.

Cons

The majority of employees have worked in the organization for their entire career and don't have an outside perspective. This though attests to the work environment and how great it can be.

I worked at Group Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good benefits. Committed staff who truly try to live the original mission of the organization.

    Cons

Organization has developed a dysfunctional culture of "Specialness". Since many of the senior leaders have never worked anywhere else their entire careers, they run the company like a giant high school clique. GHC has their own internal language, filled with abbreviations and terms that only "insiders" at GH can understand. New employees are treated as outsiders until the clique accepts them or rejects them. Rejection means being bullied, excluded, or even totally ignored. Bullying and exclusion is modeled by senior leadership on down. If you're accepted that could mean you'll be promoted to positions you're not qualified for because you have the favor of a senior leader. This dysfunctional culture is one of the primary reasons GHC does not have leaders in place with the skills and the abilities to navigate the changing healthcare market. Once these incompetent leaders are in place, the culture allows them to do anything and everything, no matter how unethical or cruel, to keep their power and position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is for the governing board. Group Health will never become a successful, healthy organization until the board faces the fact that the current CEO does not have the skills to take GHC forward. Under his leadership the org. has never made money, and never will. Following the replacement of the CEO, then each division needs to be evaluated objectively by outside sources who will help remove the dysfunctional and toxic mid-level leaders who have created and maintain the failing culture.

I have been working at Group Health full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits, decent pay, able to promote and advance within the company. Always opportunites to learn more and ask questions.

    Cons

Many long timers need to retire. They think their jobs are untouchable. Not always nice or welcoming to the newcomers. The call center employees are ridiculously monitored for everything they do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit micromanaging and auditing everything and find better ways to be better managers and quit worrying about how your numbers and stats look to your boss. Since many long timers need to retire focus on how to negotiate their departure. They hurt the organization more than you know.
