Former Employee - Intern in London, England (UK)

I worked at Groupon as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

talented people when business was starting up, great atmosphere, dynamic and challenging. highly entrepreneurial. lots of responsibility. great brand name and huge business growth.

Cons

business model unsustainable, cut throat sales management. taking advantage of cheap labour through excessive use of interns of all ages - good for interns - bad for full timers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

revise business model which is unsustainable, think about customers and clients welfare more.

I worked at Groupon full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Young environment
    Pay is decent
Easy to get promotions (if you're in the right circle)

    Cons

    Unprofessional HR policies
    Unprofessional and inexperience senior management
    Mircomanagement

I am not joking but this place is like a circus ran by cowboy's. I was working out of the Australian HQ in Sydney for 4 months and ran for my life towards the end.
The place is poorly managed yet they constantly rant on about how successful they are. HR Department is unprofessional and don't care about staff well being, their focus is to cover up the senior management's inadequacy.
The CEO and COO are extremely unprofessional and immature. Clearly not a good fit for the job but they know how to deliver the lip service to Andrew Mason to keep their jobs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management in Chicago needs to clean up the Australian operations before the situation worsen's. Too many mates from the inner circle get the promotions and other talent are left behind.

Awful changes in sales compensation plan. Unattainable goals = top talent exit.

I have been working at Groupon full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great product.
    No Dress Code.
Ability to express opinions and thoughts without retribution.
Many good, smart, and creative people.
A potentially great future if the right path is taken.

    Cons

    Unattainable sales targets.
If targets are not hit there is very little or no commission, even if you generate huge amounts of revenue.
Management constantly changing priorities -and when they do, everything you worked for is instantly irrelevant.
    High turnover.
    Extremely heavy workload.
    Monitoring of too much activity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your salespeople a fair commission based on revenue generated, not percent-to-goal. If these goals were reachable and / or proven to be reliable in the past, you might have a case, but your predictions about revenue, current and future, have often if not almost always incorrect. There is a general consensus that upper management wants the salespeople who helped build Groupon out. Judging by the recent exodus of top talent, I fear that very well may be the case.
