I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Guitar Center is a fun environment with lots of like minds. Working on the sales floor gives you access to quality equipment and there is always an opportunity to learn things if you are a novice or a trained musician employee discount is great if you are a musician.

Cons

Because the salary is sales-based, sales are always the top priority. It makes sense but when the store managers and assistant store managers have a sales quota to meet it is a conflict of interest with the employees on the floor. There is a lot of turn-over which makes the store have to hire random people off of the street with no musical background to sell equipment. Sure, selling musical instruments isn't rocket science but why not keep around people who know a thing or two about the equipment?

Advice to Management

Managers should be around long enough to protect their employees and maintain a relationship.

    Pros

    Discount on gear, networking with musicians and industry professionals, instant knowledge of new releases.

    Cons

    Low pay, have to "fade your check" to earn a commission, you are not just a salesperson but also a housekeeper and a merchandiser, most co-workers have zero understanding or knowledge in their field.

    Advice to Management

    Stop threatening lower management with losing their job, it rolls down hill. Do better market research before opening a store that won't make a profit for years.

    High earning potential if you never let up. Fun opportunity to work around the stuff you love. Great Employee Perks!

    Cons

    Difficult to earn commission bonuses in slow months. DEFINITELY NOT Economy Proof. Same pay structure regardless of market area. Opportunities for promotion are slow.

    Advice to Management

    Do away with faded commisions bonuses. Lower the hourly rate and pay commission on everything sold.
