I worked at Guitar Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    – discounts on instruments and gear
    – "being part of the music industry"

    Cons

    – clueless executive leadership
    – waste of human and financial resources
    – ownership (Bain Capital)
    – punish good employees/reward bad employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue and quit wasting the human and financial resources you've been entrusted with. Guitar Center has the potential to be a truly great company but can't seem to get out of its own way. Listen to your employees as well as your customers and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I have been working at Guitar Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You get to work around the musical gear that you love.

    Cons

The pay sucks so bad you can't afford any of it! Very very high turnover, they dock your pay if you don't sell enough [scam] "warranties," and they deduct your hourly wages out of your commission, hours that you spend in meetings, giving seminars, merchandising, and cleaning at the end of your shift. All of the above are mandatory. When you're hired they paint a picture of how you'll make a living wage, then 2 months later, after your paycheck is mere peanuts, most people end up quitting. Management finds any reason they can for disciplinary action, then they wonder why morale is low...? I would avoid working here like the plague!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your human resources like they're a valuable asset, not dispensable!
