I have been working at Gulf Coast Blood Center full-time

Pros

Saving lives is always a good thing. There is a nice sense of comradery across departments. If you want to be visible, the company is small enough that you can be. Very stable employment.

Cons

While the compensation is competitive, there is a top end on salary. The benefits are average, but not stellar. Overall, the job is what you make it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on what you are good at.

I have been working at Gulf Coast Blood Center

    Pros

The mission of what they do is wonderful. Saving lives is always a worthy cause. Most of staff is friendly. Salaries are somewhat competitive. Lots of areas to specialize in within company. Great upper management (CEO etc.).

    Cons

Horrible middle management. Middle management will not stick up for low level employees. Goals continue to be raised every year, while resources to achieve these goals are reduced. You will be accountable for how many people give blood, even if you have no control over it. There is absolutely no praise given for a hard working people and a good job done. You will however be "knocked" every time you have the slightest things go wrong. Everything is a numbers game! You are asked to be responsible for things COMPLETELY out of your control. Once new middle management came in, the entire organization suffered. A true motto among employees - "its not your fault, but its certainly your problem!" Middle management has no solution for the problems you approach them with. Donor recruitment is managed by a "bully" style of management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your employees an opportunity to achieve the goals management sets by providing necessary resources. Understand that blood drives and donations can be influenced but not controlled. Take outside factors into account instead of completely blame your employees for bad donation numbers. Lower level employees are blamed for bad donation numbers whether it is their fault or not. Continue to try and improve work environment which has helped some.
